ACTING INTERNSHIPS

If you were interested in acting, one option you might consider is getting involved with an internship. The great thing about internships is that they are readily available once you know where to find them. First, you might consider an Artistic Administration, which is a position that supports the resident assistant and associate director, helping with scripts, casting, research for production, and anything it takes to make the theater run smoothly. For this particular internship, no directing is involved but there could be times when you would assist with the rehearsals and prompting actors with tech and preview week. Typically, someone interested in dramaturgy, artistic management, or directing in classical film would find this internship beneficial.

Another good option is the internship in development. For this type of position, you would be working with fundraising, non-profit arts, and donors. In addition, the development internship generally covers things like foundation relations and corporate government relations. You would work for and closely with the Fund Raising Director helping with the planning stage and execution of events, office tasks, and research. To apply for this type of internship, the acting firms and organizations suggest the individual have strong written and oral skills.

An internship in education is quite popular. With this, you would provide support for training, community, school, and audience enrichment programs and getting those programs implemented. You would work directly with guest artists as well as the staff in the education area. Areas such as developing education outreach activities, scheduling workshops, organization events, handling registration, and anything specific to the education department.

You might also consider a general management internship, which is an excellent opportunity for people interested in working with all departments in the theater. This would include production, business, marketing, and artistic. For this position, you would offer assistance to the general manager and business manager to ensure special projects are implemented appropriately. Additional duties include research, analysis, and so on.

For the film industry, a number of excellent internship opportunities exist. Other areas you might consider include Graphic Design, excellent for hands-on training, Public Relations and Marketing, which teaches how to develop and market the audience for film, Costume, assisting in running shows, shopping, stock maintenance, Lighting, Production Management, Sound, Stage Management, Stage Properties, Technical Direction, Acting Fellows, and much, much more!
